In 1993, at just 30 years old, Jensen Huang co-founded Nvidia with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem from a booth in Denny’s. 

Despite the company's current $2.2 trillion valuation, Huang candidly admits that he and his co-founders had no idea how to start or run a business at the time. 

“Frankly, I had no idea how to do it, nor did they. None of us knew how to do anything,” Huang said, reflecting on their initial lack of business experience.

The Early Vision and Challenges:

Back in 1993, Huang believed they could revolutionize video games and computer graphics with a new kind of graphics processing unit (GPU). 

However, now at 61, Huang admits he might not choose to start the company again if given the chance. “At Nvidia, I [have] experienced failures. Great big ones — all humiliating and embarrassing,” he shared. 

The intense difficulties, vulnerability, and numerous setbacks they faced would likely deter anyone aware of them from embarking on such a venture.

Huang attributes a critical entrepreneurial trait to the ignorance of how hard starting a business can be. “I think that’s the superpower of an entrepreneur. 

They don’t know how hard it is, and they only ask themselves, ‘How hard can it be?’” Even today, Huang tricks his brain into thinking things aren’t as difficult as they are to push forward.

Huang’s Leadership Style:

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, is known for being a demanding and particular boss. In a 60 Minutes interview, employee Whitaker described Huang as “demanding, perfectionist, not easy to work with.” 

Huang agrees with this portrayal, believing that extraordinary achievements require a challenging environment. 

He emphasizes the importance of CEOs having the most direct reports to stay informed about every aspect of the company. Huang himself manages over 50 direct reports to ensure he is closely connected to the company's operations.

Nvidia's Market Dominance:

Nvidia has emerged as one of the only four companies worldwide valued at over $2 trillion, driven by the booming demand for advanced technology. 

The company’s AI chips, deemed the best in the industry, have positioned Nvidia as a market leader. Its stock market value doubled in just eight months the previous year, showcasing its significant growth and influence.

In the interview, Huang also shared his views on artificial intelligence (AI). He believes that while AI is a powerful tool, it cannot replace human judgment in every circumstance.
