In a recent social media post, entrepreneur and academic Vivek Wadhwa expressed his concerns over Tesla CEO Elon Musk's decision to opt for China over India for manufacturing. 

Wadhwa believes that Musk's choice could potentially make him the "biggest loser" in the long run.


Elon Musk's Missed Opportunity in India:

Wadhwa revealed that he had urged Elon Musk to consider relocating Tesla's manufacturing to India, where he believes Musk could have dominated the market by now. 

He cautioned Musk against choosing China, warning that the country would "rob him blind."


The Shift in the Automotive Industry:

Theresa Fallon, Director of the Centre for Russia Europe Asia Studies, highlighted the challenges faced by US and European automakers in China. 

Chinese firms have rapidly caught up with foreign counterparts, such as General Motors, who initially taught them the automotive trade. 

Now, companies like BYD, Geely, and Great Wall are expanding globally, while foreign firms like Jeep's joint venture in China have faced bankruptcy.


Elon Musk's China Venture:

Despite canceling his trip to India, citing "very heavy Tesla obligations," Musk made a surprise visit to China. 

He met with Premier Li Qiang to discuss Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and data-transfer permissions. 

Musk's visit garnered endorsements and agreements, including one with Baidu for mapping licenses, paving the way for Tesla's expansion in China.


The Rise of Chinese Competitors:

Chinese rivals like XPeng and Huawei Technologies are also developing their own self-driving software, posing potential competition to Tesla in the Chinese market.


Conclusion:

Elon Musk's decision to prioritize China over India for manufacturing has sparked debates about the future of Tesla's global expansion. 

While China offers immediate benefits and endorsements for Tesla, India could have provided long-term dominance in a rapidly growing market.
